AMETEK INTRODUCES ORTEC® INTERCHANGEABLE DETECTOR MODULE (IDM) High-Resolution, Self-Contained Unit Serves as a Building Block For Homeland Security and Industrial Radiation Detection Applications

OAK RIDGE, TN, May 30, 2007–AMETEK’s ORTEC® Products Group has introduced a unique, self-contained, high-purity germanium (HPGe)-based detector module. The Interchangeable Detector Module (IDM) is the latest addition to ORTEC’s Detective-ASP (Advanced Spectroscopic Portal) Series of advanced nuclide identifiers for Homeland Security and other industrial radiation detection applications.

The compact ORTEC IDM was developed as a building block for a wide range of applications that require gamma-ray detection, monitoring and analysis, including portal monitors, aerial surveying systems, radiation search systems, process monitoring, gamma particulate aerosol monitoring, and waste assay installations. It offers a perfect solution for system integrators looking for a compact, interchangeable high-resolution detector that doesn’t require liquid nitrogen cooling.

The ORTEC Detective-ASP IDM utilizes a large area P-type HPGe crystal cooled with a high-capacity Stirling cycle cooler. It is easily mounted onto a standard 19” instrument rack.  A built-in removable back shield protects the unit from high-angle gamma rays from the rear of the instrument.

The units are designed for rugged use and reliable service. The interchangeable units can be swapped out quickly for servicing and re-operational in seconds, limiting system downtime. Units are available with or without software. System integrators also may utilize the ORTEC Connections-32 Programmers’ Toolkit to develop custom applications.
