Low Cost Mechanical Cooler for Germanium Detectors Introduced to Replace Liquid
Nitrogen
OAK RIDGE, TN, November 1, 2000– PerkinElmer (NYSE:PKI), - ORTEC Products, has released a revolutionary
new product designed to provide a low cost mechanical replacement for traditional Liquid
Nitrogen (LN2) cooling of high purity germanium detectors (HPGe). The innovative new
product, X-Cooler™, uses proven patented technology available exclusively from
PerkinElmer Instruments which allows the unit to use economical components and still
provide the cooling necessary for the low temperature operation of germanium detectors.
Unlike other mechanical coolers, the X-Cooler will sell for about the same price as the
traditional LN2 dewar and cryostat.
The X-Cooler is available with new HPGe detector purchases and also can be retrofitted
to existing ORTEC PopTop® detectors. Not only will it replace LN2 cooling for
standard applications in analytical laboratories, environmental monitors, and process
monitors, but X-Cooler has the potential to open up new markets which were previously
unreachable due to the LN2 cooling requirements. The new unit will provide cooling
anywhere electricity is available.
