When choosing a gamma spectroscopy system, you need to answer the following questions:

1. What kind of sample will I be counting? Marinelli beakers? Filter Papers? Both plus Others?
2. How many isotopes will likely be present in any one single sample? If only one or two, then a NaI detector will work well. If more than a few isotopes are likely to be present, then a HPGe detector will be required.
3. What type of shielding/background performance do I need? High activity samples like those from a reactor coolant generally do not require much ambient shielding. Air filters analyzed for EPA release requirements from a facility often require large shields AND low background detector cryostats to get the best MDA performance.
4. What kind of electronics do I need? NIM-based analog electronics for all detector types are available. However, better functionality and improved long-term stability can be gained from using an ORTEC DSPEC, DSPEC-Plus, or digiDART digital electronics especially for HPGe detectors.
5. How many samples do I need to count a day? If more than a few samples are analyzed on one detector in any single working day, you may consider purchasing an automatic sample changer to take advantage of overnight detector down times. An automatic sample changer will often pay for itself in less than a few months by making the laboratory more productive during hours when nobody is working!
